What a great night's sleep! The cabin's air conditioning was wonderful and it was nice to be able to sleep under the duvet. Also great to read that the Pirates were victorious again. Need to read the comments about why Cutch was ejected.
Breakfast at 7:00 and then time to pick up receivers, turn in optional tour forms, and pick up boarding passes. Then on the coach to Salzburg. We debated about going on the tour, but after consulting with Lucas, we decided that there wasn't enough to occupy a rainy day there. Even though we've been to Salzburg twice, we can always find something knew to see or to learn
We made a stop around 9:45 at a Landzeit (upscale rest site) at Mondsee. The sun tried to peek out, and it was a beautiful of the lake where some of TSOM was filmed. I managed to get a distant shot of the church where the wedding scene was filmed.
Throughout the drive Lucas talked about a number of topics relating to the economics of the EU, the German language, and Austrian people and history.
Arriving in Salzburg, we were met by our guide, Phillip. The rain had stopped and the sky looked promising. We made our way through the throngs of tourists to Mirabelle Gardens, familiar as the site of Do Re Mi in TSOM. The gardens were full of flowers that had been planted in mixed beds, except the roses. As I walked through, I remembered our Bergen und Burgen trip when my Sackets students sang their way through the garden. Such wonderful memories.
Before we crosed the bridge into the Altstadt we saw the Mozart Wohnhause. The bridge has taken on the look of so many bridges today - the lock bridge.
We turned a few corners to find ourselves in front of the Residenz, the home of the arch bishop. This is a familiar place to TSOM buffs as it was the place where the Nazi flag hung.
The area in front of the Dom was being set up for the Salzburg Festival and so had barricades and cranes around it. A few more turns brought us to St. Peter's Archabbey and our restaurant for lunch - Stiftskellar St. Peter, supposedly the oldest restaurant in Europe with a date of 803 above its doors. Lunch was beef broth with spaetzle, Wiener Schnitzel, and Sacher torte, and, of course, beer. Very filling.
After lunch we had some free time for exploring Salzburg on our own. We meandered through an old cemetery. It resembles the on from TSOM, but was not the one filmed because permission was not granted to use consecrated ground.
We then went into the Dom. The area up to the height of the central dome was very impressive. The cathedral seats 11, 000 people. It is also home to the baptismal font used for Mozart's baptism.
Just a short walk away was the Franciscan Church, one of the oldest churches in Salzburg, erected between 1408 and 1450.
Then to Paul Fürst's shop to buy some original recipe Mozart Kugel
We walked to the end of the Getreidegasse and found a beautiful façade of St. Blasius Kirche. It looks like it is attached to the face of. Mönchsberg. I had not seen this before.
Back to the meeting place at 3:45 for a short walk to the coach. On board Lucas treated us to a Mozart ball and we enjoyed the beautiful countryside on the way back to Linz.
Just a short time to change before the Captain's welcome drink and dinner. Hard time keeping track of the courses tonight: Salad of Goat Cheese, Sauteed pransw with mashed and crusty potatpes with a leek and lobster sauce, Cassis sherbert, Grilled Veal Loin with an endive and onion pie, home made lemon pie with lemonn ice.
A time on the deck listening to the end of the PIrates game (blew a lead to loose 5-4) and enjoying the vista before bed.
